Until recently Tony was the Independent Chair of Community 1st, a government sponsored public/private partnership developing and maintaining community based primary health, social care, leisure and community premises in Oldham, Sheffield, Stockport and Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
His experience includes work in a variety of local government roles from 1969 until 2004 and subsequently he has supported various national and local government strategy reviews as a government adviser with a focus on public health and social care. He was appointed in 2011 by the Secretary of State responsible for children, families and education services to lead a formal intervention into failing child protection and education services in Doncaster.
After completing his degree at Birmingham University, Tony trained as a social worker and specialised in child protection. Later he became the first Head of Inspectorate for Birmingham Social Services.
Tony worked for Kirklees Council from 1988 to 2004. Initially he was appointed as Director of Social Services, and then in an Executive Director role which at different times also gave him responsibility for Education, Housing and Benefit Services. In 1998 he was appointed Chief Executive of the Council.
