The Whitehaven Academy is delighted that one of its students has been called up to join Team GB at a swim camp in South Africa this week.

Anna Newlands, a year 11 student at the school, will jet off to Pretoria on 27th February to take part in the three week long swimming training camp. Anna will be mentored by and share a room with two time Olympic gold winning swimmer Rebecca Adlington!

Anna, who swims for the county and at national level, said: “I’m really excited. I want to seize this chance to train with Team GB swimmers. As well as the excellent coaching, having Becky as team manager will be really helpful and she will be able to give me excellent advice.”

Lynette Norris, Principal at The Whitehaven Academy, commented: “This is a wonderful achievement by Anna to get called up. It is absolutely fantastic to see such a great role model for younger students gain recognition for all of her hard work. Not only is she a fantastic athlete but she is also a straight A grade student and a lead prefect with a great attitude with respect to everything in her school life.”

This amazing opportunity will allow Anna to train with elite swimmers, many of whom are several years her senior are currently studying in their second or third year at University as they prepare for future Olympic Games in Rio and Tokyo. The coaching provided will help ensure that high flying Anna can maintain a great work life balance and ensure her every success in the future, both in sport and academically.
The Whitehaven Academy believes strongly that sport is an integral part of school life, and is currently working with partners such as the Manchester Giants basketball team to improve the sporting opportunities available to students and to engage more students in sporting activities.
