WOW Day (World of Work)
Posted on by Bright Tribe
Year 9 students at The Whitehaven Academy took part in their annual World of Work Day last Wednesday. The day is timed to encourage the students to think about their futures just before they make their option choices. All Year 9 students were given a day off-timetable to take part in engaging, inspiring and informative activities. They were also given the opportunity to meet people from various sectors of employment, through a speed dating session in which the students had to interview people from the world of work to find out more about the industry, their job role and how they got there. The speed dating session was enjoyed by both students and employers with our students coming away with a greater appreciation of how they can prepare themselves for life after school.
INSPIRA, which co-organised the event, aimed to help improve students’ understanding of the world of work and the skills needed to make people employable. As well as aiming to enthuse students to achieve their potential and aim as high as possible in their aspirations. Miss Kirsty Robson, Head of Vocational Learning said “The day was a big success with students learning a great deal and enjoying their experiences throughout the day, the day has helped our Year 9 students to think about their future in the adult world and aspire to achieve”
The University of Cumbria sent two student ambassadors who ran a session on university life giving information on costs, daily routines and their personal experiences. The ambassadors said “The day was an excellent opportunity to find out what Whitehaven Academy students thought of going to University and what the University of Cumbria could encourage more students to go”
The school would like to thank all the employers, speakers and contributors representing 37 different organisations, from a range of sectors that contributed to the success of the event.
