Students at Alde Valley Academy in Leiston today celebrated yet another set of outstanding results today. This year’s GCSE results saw 62% of pupils gaining a grade 4 and above in maths and English combined, and 43% gaining a grade 5 or above in maths and English combined. This continues the rapid improvements that the school has made since converting to academy status under the Bright Tribe Trust and leadership of Principal Michael Wilson including excellent A-level results last week which saw the number of A* – C grades achieved by students rise from 44% in 2016 to 57% in 2017.
The 2017 summer exam season saw students sitting the new grade 9 – 1 GCSEs in English and maths for the first time. Under the new grading system grade 9 is the highest grade, set above the current A*. The intention of the new system is to provide more differentiation, particularly among higher achieving pupils. As the grades do not map across to the A* – G format this means comparison with previous years cannot be made immediately.
In spite of the increased challenge of the new GCSEs, a number of students at Alde Valley Academy gained exceptional results, including grade 9s and A* grades in subjects which retained the A* – G grading system. Sadie Ellis is one exceptional pupil, achieving a grade 9 in English language and literature, an A* in science and two A grades in history and science. Maisie Debelgeonne also achieved a grade 9 for maths as well as an 8 in English and two A grades in history and science. Evie Banham also achieved highly, gaining two grade 7s in English and maths, a grade 8 in English literature and 3 A*s in triple science, science and sports science. Ezra Taylor also gained an 8 in maths, a 7 in English language and literature, an A* in further science and an A in additional science and sports science.
“These outstanding results celebrate another significant achievement for Alde Valley Academy, building on our record-breaking GCSE results in 2016 as well as our excellent A-level results last week,” said Michael Wilson, Principal at Alde Valley Academy. “We plan to continue this success and look forward to welcoming our returning students back to school in September, as well as our new Year 7 cohort. A huge well done to all our students!”
Mary McKeeman, Chief Operating Officer, Bright Tribe Trust commented, “It is wonderful to see Alde Valley Academy achieve another set of outstanding results. Thanks to the hard work of everyone at the school and wider Bright Tribe Trust which has helped make this fantastic achievement possible.”
